After a near three decade career in law enforcement, Joseph Dennis was sworn in as the Executive Undersheriff for the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office in June of 2011. Undersheriff Dennis began his law enforcement career in 1978 as a member of the Clifton Police Department where he served for 27 years. As a supervisor, his primary role was acting as a liaison between the department, line officers, and the community. While assigned to the Traffic Division and through extensive training he was certified as an Accident Reconstructionist and was responsible for the thorough investigation of serious and fatal motor vehicle accidents that occurred within the municipality.
As the Executive Undersheriff, Dennis commands the day to day operational activities of the department. Also, he assists Sheriff Berdnik in exercising executive control and direction over policy development, strategic planning, and research functions, which include the development and implementation of master plans, the development of department policy and budget, and the conduct of comprehensive research. In the event that Sheriff Berdnik is unavailable, Undersheriff Dennis is the next in command of the department.
Undersheriff Dennis is a graduate of Passaic High School, the Essex County Police Academy and holds an Associate’s degree in Occupational Studies from the Culinary Institute of America. He has numerous certifications, professional accreditations and memberships and awards that he has earned throughout his law enforcement career. Undersheriff Dennis is a lifelong resident of Passaic County.
