The Passaic County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Program offers dedicated individuals the opportunity to serve their community in a volunteer law enforcement capacity. Participants in this program are appointed as Special Law Enforcement Officers – Class II (SLEO II) and undergo the same rigorous background process as full-time officers. This is a non-paid, volunteer-based position that supports the Sheriff's Office in its mission to enhance public safety throughout Passaic County.
Training Requirements:
Deputy Sheriffs appointed as SLEO II must complete over 450 hours of training, as mandated by the New Jersey Police Training Commission (PTC). Training is conducted at an approved police academy and includes both classroom instruction and practical law enforcement skills.
Training Schedule:
- Evenings: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (6:00 PM – 11:00 PM)
- Weekends: Saturday (7:00 AM – 3:00 PM)
Eligibility & Appointment:
Applicants must meet the same entry qualifications as full-time police officers.
- Individuals must first be appointed by the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office, before they can be enrolled in the police academy.
- Self-registration is not permitted. All applicants must be sponsored and submitted by a police agency.
