The Passaic County Sheriff’s Office Civilian Search and Rescue Team is a dedicated group of trained volunteers who assist law enforcement and emergency services in locating missing persons and supporting search efforts during natural disasters or critical incidents.
Comprised of community members with specialized training and a strong commitment to public service, along with trained law enforcement personnel, the SAR team is activated in situations where additional manpower, expertise, or local knowledge can help make the difference between life and death.
Mission
The mission of the Civilian SAR Team is to support professional first responders in search, rescue, and recovery operations, while enhancing the Sheriff’s Office’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies across Passaic County.

- Missing children or adults (including individuals with Alzheimer’s, autism, or mental health concerns)
- Lost or injured hikers, bikers, or outdoor recreationists
- Natural disasters, such as floods, storms, or building collapses
- Evidence or area searches in support of criminal investigations
- Mutual aid requests from local or regional agencies
All SAR members undergo initial and ongoing training in:
- Search techniques and grid operations
- Radio communication and incident command protocols
- Basic first aid and emergency response
